beer!

God kväll alla. Hows it going? Its your swede, Mike here, again with an update for you all. I’m a man of my word (most of the time) and when I say I’m going to update this site often, I really mean it. One of my personal pet peevs is when I come to a website that hasnt been updated in like a cagillion years. It makes me cry, seriously. I don’t want this spot to be one of the millions of useless spots on the world wide web in which the owner hasnt updated since like 2002. No my friends, I will keep you up to date, and when I mean up to date, I mean UP to date.

Things in Uppsala are great. The weather this morning was like KABLAM! BOOM! sunshine out of nowhere. I personally love autumn and this season in Sweden is just spectaular. In the coming weeks I’ll bring your way some pics of the leaves changing, etc. One thing that I have really appriciated since I’ve been in Sweden is the opportunity to do things that I found time to put off (aka procrastinate on) while I was in Bellevue. I don’t have the “normal” tv shows to waste my time, I don’t have my “normal” group of friends to slack off with. Thus I’ve been doing certain things differently, for example, working out every day. I got a membership to Friskies&Svettis almost immediatly when I arrived in Uppsala and I try to get out there every day to either lift or run or both. Its about a 20 min walk to get there but well worth it and nice senery on the way. Recently I’ve been working out with a friend in my coridoor named Jan, from Cologne, Germany. This Jan guy from Cologne is 185cm of pure muscle. Just check out his pic (after a work out we had today)!

He has a good time pushing me and showing me new techniques on weights that I would never have figured out in a million years. Jan speaks perfect german (duh!), great swedish and decent english. For all the ladies out there, he is also single! *snicker* Mark: Don’t be jealous, you’ll always be thebigswede’s “real” workout buddy – Jan is simply a suitable temporary replacment.

I alla fall. Ryan and Meg are visiting Karl and myself tomarrow in Uppsala and we have a full day planned including hitting Gamla Uppsala and doing some genuine Svensk shopping – looking foward to that. I’ll have more pics and stuff for you tomarrow. Up top you can see a pic of some beers I picked up today @ System Bolaget, I think I’m going to enjoy them with some Finish girls from class that invited me over to their coridoor party – wish me luck! 🙂 Peace.

Skansen Moose

Greetings! Welcome to the website in which I will dutifully attempt to keep you up to date on all the happenings of my life while studying in Sweden and beyond. I hope you check back often and if you have any suggestions or comments please send them my way!

As per the title of this post, I have now lived in Sweden for over one month. Its hard to believe, I know I know, but its true. There are certain things that I miss about Bellevue but at the same time there are certain things in Sweden that I have grown used to which I wouldn’t give up for the world either. For example…coffee! Maybe you are like me and you can’t get enough of the hot, dark, enlivening beverage. Or maybe you hate coffee….but you wouldn’t if you lived in Sweden! No joke, coffee in Sweden, for whatever reason makes coffee from the US taste like dishwater. I know that sounds harsh but the coffee here is really that good. And what is even more great is its everywhere. You go into a little cafe for lunch and no matter what you buy coffee is almost always included. Its just an assumed part of life here. Heck, even McDonalds and (the Swedish fastfood equivalent) Max always includes coffee with every meal. Makes sense to me!

Speaking of coffee, somehow Starbucks has not yet invaded the lands of Scandinavia, yet. However, the infection of large chain coffee stores has begun…with a single, solitary, lonely little Tully’s Coffee in the heart of Stockholm. I took a picture of it during my last visit because it seemed so out of place and curious…even though at home there exists its seems either a ‘bucks or a Tully’s every 100 meters or so in every direction.

I visited Stockholm last, what was it, um Saturday I think with Karl Peterson (my bud from UW) and had a great time with him, Ryan and Meg around the city. Ill have more on that later…but I leave you with a picture of a moose we saw at Skansen…and then another picture of me riding a toy moose – looks fun eh?!

Till next time – Ha det så bra,

Mike
